Do You Know How Heavy Your Lunch Is?

Usually, my bag is heavy with a laptop, books, and a lovingly prepared lunch. But on Ekadashi, the bag feels weightless, and for once, the “hunger” that usually rules the day miraculously vanishes. We spend our whole lives working to “pay” for our food, but are we actually settling the bill? Or are we just ignoring the debt we owe to the Sun, the Earth, and God who made them all? If we aren’t offering our food back to God, are we truly eating or are we just incurring a debt we can’t pay back? In the material world, “you die so I can live” is the standard. But there is a way to break this cycle of debt. Dive into my latest post on why Ekadashi is more than just a fast. What is the “weight” of our food?

One day, as I set out for the morning, my backpack felt much lighter, practically weightless. Normally, it carries a laptop, a notebook, my meditation beads, some spiritual books to distribute to those looking for a higher taste in life, and a lovingly prepared lunch, offered first to Krishna. But on this day, there was no food in it.

On the eleventh (it can vary some times) day of every fortnight, Ekadashi, those who wish to make rapid spiritual progress observe a fast. The specific standard of the fast depends on many factors, but in my case, I am blessed that I do not need to eat on that day. It took a long time to get there, and the process was gradual, but it has been well worth it. I don’t take any credit for this, because He who creates the hunger that appears unbearable on other days simply chooses to free me from it on Ekadashi. This is so we can focus on something higher.

People sometimes fast for different reasons. But all the purposes of fasting are served when we fast for spiritual purposes, just as all purposes of a small well are served by a gigantic fresh water lake.

On Ekadashi days, I do drink water, which is a great blessing. Water cleanses in so many ways. One can appreciate the beautiful taste of water more when one is fasting from food.

O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water

As a spirit soul full of eternity, knowledge and bliss, it is a humbling paradox that we are saddled with a body that “needs” to eat, sleep, and seek recreation. Because we are presently in the material world, everyone must work for their sustenance. Even the powerful “king of the jungle”, the lion cannot simply lie down, go to sleep, and expect food to enter its mouth.

न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रवि-शन्ति मुखे मृगाः

Animals don’t enter into the mouth of a sleeping lion

The weight of a meal

Eating is a requirement to keep the body alive, so we spend a vast amount of time working and making all the necessary arrangements. Yet, even when we pay for our food, we aren’t paying the full price of food. In this material world, some other living entity must die so that we may live. Whether it is a grain of rice, a bean, a potato, or a nut, a life is given so that I can survive. Because of this, I am careful to honor the life of these living entities by offering them in sacred sacrifice to Krishna.

In this sense, food is “heavy” in many ways, not just by its weight in a bag or its economic price, but by the karmic reactions attached to it.

Generally, the material world is a place where the philosophy is “you die so I can live”. Those who wish to advance spiritually abstain from meat.

The Difference Between Need and Greed

Beyond the debt we owe to the source of our food, there is a karmic debt we incur when we take more than our share. We often mistake our greed for our “need,” and in doing so, we deprive others of their rightful portion.

Birds Eating grains and Seeds
Birds Eating grains and Seeds

Consider a sack of rice left out on an open road. A bird flies down, picks up a single grain at a time to satisfy its hunger, and flies away. Another bird follows, doing the same. They take only what is required for their sustenance. But when a human passes by, they don’t see a single meal! They may see a surplus to be hoarded. They might take the entire sack home, leaving nothing for the others who might follow. By claiming more than our rightful quota, we tighten the knot of karmic debts, forgetting that what we take in excess is effectively stolen from another’s plate. A person who takes more than their need makes themselves liable to have less than they need in future, as per the law of karma.

No one is recommending starvation, but moderation to our bare necessity is important, and voluntary fasting enables that, in the grand scheme of things.

ईशावास्यमिदँ सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् ।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्य स्विद्धनम् ॥ १॥

īśāvāsyam idaḿ sarvaṁ
yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat
tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā
mā gṛdhaḥ kasya svid dhanam

Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord. One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set aside as his quota, and one should not accept other things, knowing well to whom they belong.

The Hidden Costs

I reflected in quiet wonder, tracing the journey of a single morsel of food back to its source. We easily settle our debts with the farmer, the trader, and the storekeeper, the visible hands that bring food to our table. But what of the invisible ones? Mother Earth charges no rent for her soil; the sun sends no invoice for his light and warmth, the clouds ask for no payment for the rain. Our currency reaches the middlemen, but it never reaches the Source. Do we not owe a deeper debt to the ones who give everything for nothing in return?

Watering the Root

The only way to truly benefit all these contributors is to offer the food back to God. As God says:

यज्ञशिष्टाशिनः सन्तो मुच्यन्ते सर्वकिल्बिषै ।
भुञ्जते ते त्वघं पापा ये पचन्त्यात्मकारणात् ॥ १३ ॥

yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo
mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ
bhuñjate te tv aghaṁ pāpā
ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt
Synonyms

The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.

https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/3/13/

Anyone who does not offer their food to God is caught in a cycle of debt. It is a matter of “an eye for an eye.” If I eat a grain of rice selfishly, I incur the karmic reaction of becoming a grain of rice myself, to be eaten by that same soul in another form. Time separates me from the inevitable consequences of my actions, but the consequence is unavoidable. As sure as death.

This is because when we water the root of the tree, all the branches, twigs, and leaves automatically get watered.

यथा तरोर्मूलनिषेचनेन
तृप्यन्ति तत्स्कन्धभुजोपशाखा: ।
प्राणोपहाराच्च यथेन्द्रियाणां
तथैव सर्वार्हणमच्युतेज्या ॥ १४ ॥

yathā taror mūla-niṣecanena
tṛpyanti tat-skandha-bhujopaśākhāḥ
prāṇopahārāc ca yathendriyāṇāṁ
tathaiva sarvārhaṇam acyutejyā

As pouring water on the root of a tree energizes the trunk, branches, twigs and everything else, and as supplying food to the stomach enlivens the senses and limbs of the body, simply worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead through devotional service automatically satisfies the demigods, who are parts of that Supreme Personality.

Do you know how heavy your food is?

Can you afford the price of your food?

Can you carry it’s weight?

That Ekadashi was a great day, packed with a lot of extra time and energy. We often have no idea how much work it actually takes just to procure, eat, and digest all that food. The very next day, of course, my bag was heavy again. But having reflected on the cost, I carried it with a renewed sense of gratitude and responsibility.

With gratitude for feedback on a previous version of this article from my elder brother, Sriman Ravindra Joshi.

Democracy means a society ruled by Hogs, Dogs, Camels, and Asses

Democracy is much praised, but what does it really produce? A government where the leaders are no better than hogs, dogs, animals and asses, just like the people who elect them. Don’t believe me? Read on!

Nowadays, it is the age of democracy for a significant part of the world.

Democracy is meant to be a government “By the People, For the People, and Of the People”. Sounds like a great concept in theory.

Until we see what is actually happening in practice.

In my post Human Animal Farm, I wrote about this… I wanted to focus on this particular point about what a democratic government ends up being and why.

In general, I use the phrase “untrained humans” as humans who do not know or appreciate the true value of human life, which is meant for spiritual perfection.

Instead, these untrained humans spend all their activities in the 4 basic animal activities…

  • Eating
  • Sleeping
  • Mating
  • Defending

If you look at any species of germ, insect, fish, bird, animal, or even a plant, we see that they conduct these 4 activities, and their lives essentially revolve around those 4 activities…

The ancient Sanskrit Hitopadesha (Instruction for Welfare), which is an instruction to all of us, especially in modern times, defines a human being devoid of “dharma” as equivalent to a beast.

A 2-legged or 3-legged beast, but a beast nevertheless.

āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunaṃ cha
samānam_etat_pashubhir_narāṇām |
dharmo hi teṣhāmadhiko visheṣho
dharmeṇa hīnāḥ pashubhiḥ samānāḥ ||
Food, sleep, fear and mating, these acts of humans are similar to animals.
Of them (humans), dharma is the only special thing, without dharma humans are also animals

Why is that?

Just look at the creatures around you – whether it be an ant or an elephant… you can hardly interest them in any subject matter beyond these 4 – eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. And neither do they have to work very hard, or get some kind of education to fulfill those aims.

Our modern education system is largely focused around teaching students how to earn a livelihood… because we have made earning a livelihood so complicated that it takes training just to find a little food and some shelter. As for mating and defending, no one needs training, it comes naturally to everyone.

However, there is no education to teach people in general about the higher purpose of life.

śāstreṣv iyān eva suniścito nṛṇāṁ
kṣemasya sadhryag-vimṛśeṣu hetuḥ
asaṅga ātma-vyatirikta ātmani
dṛḍhā ratir brahmaṇi nirguṇe ca yā

It has been conclusively decided in the scriptures, after due consideration, that the ultimate goal for the welfare of human society is detachment from the bodily concept of life and increased and steadfast attachment for the Supreme Lord, who is transcendental, beyond the modes of material nature.

https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/4/22/21/

And this precisely is the thing that needs training! But we have no such training available to society at large.

Democracy, as a system, depends on the quality of the electors, the qualification of the voters. When a particular society gets bad government, then that means that the electors were at fault. Either the right candidates never ran for election, thinking it to be a fool’s errand, or the right candidates were not chosen.

’tis a folly to be wise where ignorance is bliss, goes the idiom!

Why is this?

Let us examine a pack of wolves, relatives of the dogs… who gets chosen as the Leader of the Pack? The most ferocious and qualified wolf of course, in some cases the winner has to fight for it.

So, if humans were just like dogs who would they choose? The biggest most qualified dog of course!

And why these 4 animals in particular?

Hogs:

Persons who have no discrimination in the matter of foodstuff and who eat all sorts of rubbish are compared to hogs. Hogs are very much attached to eating stools. So stool is a kind of foodstuff for a particular type of animal. And even stones are eatables for a particular type of animal or bird. But the human being is not meant for eating everything and anything; he is meant to eat grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, sugar, etc. Animal food is not meant for the human being. For chewing solid food, the human being has a particular type of teeth meant for cutting fruits and vegetables. The human being is endowed with two canine teeth as a concession for persons who will eat animal food at any cost. It is known to everyone that one man’s food is another man’s poison. Human beings are expected to accept the remnants of food offered to Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and the Lord accepts foodstuff from the categories of leaves, flowers, fruits, etc. (Bg. 9.26). As prescribed by Vedic scriptures, no animal food is offered to the Lord. Therefore, a human being is meant to eat a particular type of food. He should not imitate the animals to derive so-called vitamin values. Therefore, a person who has no discrimination in regard to eating is compared to a hog.

Dogs:

Modern university education practically prepares one to acquire a doggish mentality with which to accept the service of a greater master. After finishing a so-called education, the so-called educated persons move like dogs from door to door with applications for some service, and mostly they are driven away, informed of no vacancy. As dogs are negligible animals and serve the master faithfully for bits of bread, a man serves a master faithfully without sufficient rewards.

https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/2/3/19/

Camels:

The camel is a kind of animal that takes pleasure in eating thorns. A person who wants to enjoy family life or the worldly life of so-called enjoyment is compared to the camel. Materialistic life is full of thorns, and so one should live only by the prescribed method of Vedic regulations just to make the best use of a bad bargain. Life in the material world is maintained by sucking one’s own blood. The central point of attraction for material enjoyment is sex life. To enjoy sex life is to suck one’s own blood, and there is not much more to be explained in this connection. The camel also sucks its own blood while chewing thorny twigs. The thorns the camel eats cut the tongue of the camel, and so blood begins to flow within the camel’s mouth. The thorns, mixed with fresh blood, create a taste for the foolish camel, and so he enjoys the thorn-eating business with false pleasure. Similarly, the great business magnates, industrialists who work very hard to earn money by different ways and questionable means, eat the thorny results of their actions mixed with their own blood. Therefore the Bhāgavatam has situated these diseased fellows along with the camels.

Asses:

The ass is an animal who is celebrated as the greatest fool, even amongst the animals. The ass works very hard and carries burdens of the maximum weight without making profit for itself. The ass is generally engaged by the washerman, whose social position is not very respectable. And the special qualification of the ass is that it is very much accustomed to being kicked by the opposite sex. When the ass begs for sexual intercourse, he is kicked by the fair sex, yet he still follows the female for such sexual pleasure. A henpecked man is compared, therefore, to the ass. The general mass of people work very hard, especially in the Age of Kali. In this age the human being is actually engaged in the work of an ass, carrying heavy burdens and driving ṭhelā and rickshaws. The so-called advancement of human civilization has engaged a human being in the work of an ass. The laborers in great factories and workshops are also engaged in such burdensome work, and after working hard during the day, the poor laborer has to be again kicked by the fair sex, not only for sex enjoyment but also for so many household affairs.

What happens when these hogs, dogs, camels, and asses go to the elections?

Now take a look at our leaders, and decide if any of these men and women are actually above the level of hogs, dogs, camels, and asses.

Who is your democratic society ruled by?

Tongue, Belly, Genital Consciousness

How are you living your life? Would you like to relish genuine human life? Or stay on the animal platform?

During a class by my spiritual master, he said this phrase “Tongue, Belly and Genital Consciousness”. When we boil it down to the essential, we see that in this world, practically every one is in the mood of trying to satisfy their tongues, their bellies, and their genitals.

Of course, for creatures other than human, they have no choice but to follow their instinct. The dog must go around and sniff out the urine of other dogs. The birds must peck around and look for that worm. The fish must constantly swim around trying to find something to eat. The male or female of any species must find a mate… eating, sleeping, mating and defending, that’s all animals ever do.

But humans, we have been given a higher consciousness. Yes, to stay alive, we must gratify our senses to some extent. But what happens if we never transcend the urge of the tongue, the pull of the belly, and the itch of the genitals?

We remain animals. Yes, we may travel in the most fancy cars, planes, or yachts, live in the most opulent mansions, wear the most exquisite clothes, but what do we do with all that? Run here and there with our tongues out, trying hard to get some taste, the same taste we have experienced many times, chewing the same old, same old, tongue, belly, genitals. Very polished animals, but animals nevertheless.

Human society is chasing after the next big thing all the time, better clothing, better food, better residences, better conveyances, even wanting to go and live on other planets… what what will we do in all those? Eat, Sleep, Mate, and Defend? Just like the animals.

युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु ।
युक्तस्वप्‍नावबोधस्य योगो भवति दु:खहा ॥ १७ ॥

yuktāhāra-vihārasya
yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu
yukta-svapnāvabodhasya

He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.

https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/6/17/

If someone practices yoga, spirituality, or religion simply to improve their sex life, they are no better than an animal.

The scriptures repeatedly extol us to get out of the grip of this eating, sleeping, mating, and defending.

स एव पुनर्निद्राजगरगृहीतोऽन्धे तमसि मग्न: शून्यारण्य इव शेते नान्यत्किञ्चन वेद शव इवापविद्ध: ॥ २० ॥

sa eva punar nidrājagara-gṛhīto ’ndhe tamasi magnaḥ śūnyāraṇya iva śete nānyat-kiñcana veda śava ivāpaviddhaḥ.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued speaking to Mahārāja Parīkṣit: My dear King, sleep is exactly like a python. Those who wander in the forest of material life are always devoured by the python of sleep. Being bitten by this python, they always remain in the darkness of ignorance. They are like dead bodies thrown in a distant forest. Thus the conditioned souls cannot understand what is going on in life.

https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/5/14/20/

But human life means “Nidrāhāra-vihārakādi-vijitau” – to conquer over the pressure of sleep, food, and sense gratification.

The famous 6 Goswamis of Vrindavana did this, but this was not their goal, Rupa Goswami, Sanatana Goswami, Raghunatha Dasa Goswami, Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami, Gopala Bhatta Goswami, and Jiva Goswami were so fully absorbed, practically intoxicated, in Krishna and His associates, that they naturally lost all taste for sense enjoyments, and they were able to sustain themselves with about 2 hours of sleep daily, and hardly any food. In such a state, they left behind personal examples and texts that will prove to be the saviour of humanity.

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada also followed in the footsteps of the 6 Goswamis of Vrindavana.

If we do this, we can proceed to divine life, otherwise, we will descend back to animal life.

What can you do to rise to the platform of genuine human life? How may I serve you on your journey?
